The Small Business Diaries - Lately Studio

The Small Business Diaries - Lately Studio

Tell me a little bit about yourself

I’m Emma and I run Lately Studio as well as working as a freelance designer. I originally wanted to study Fine Art and work as an oil painter but after deciding not to go to university I found my love for graphic design. Mid-century design in particular is a big love of mine and a lot of my work is inspired by vintage and retro packaging!

What inspired/led you to start your business?

In 2019 I started a shop on Etsy, it was my way of starting a creative career in some form whilst I was working part-time at a garden centre and feeling very confused with my life. Originally I was only offering commissions, before beginning to offer a few smaller products such a stickers and postcards. It was only in 2021 I rebranded to Lately Studio and finally felt like I had direction and a proper little business! I’ve loved filling it with all the funky things I could always imagine but struggle to find elsewhere.

Which collection/product is your personal favourite?

This constantly changes and it’s usually the latest thing I’ve designed that’s always my favourite! So I’d say the motel daily pad and ideas notepad that I just launched are some of my current faves but I’ve also got such a soft spot for the keyrings I launched last year. I’ve got both of them on my keys at the moment and they always make me so happy!

What is your favourite product to design?

Again, I think this changes all the time! I’m working on some new washi tapes at the moment and I’d forgotten how much fun they are - I love the endless possibilities!  I also get my tapes packaged in adorable cardboard boxes which are such a fun extra to design.

What is your bestselling product?

Probably the wavy floral daily pad and the graphic floral washi tape. They were both some of the first pieces of stationery I designed and I’m so glad to know people still love them.

What product do you think deserves a lil extra love?

The keyrings! I think most people come to Lately for the stationery so the home and lifestyle bits get a little forgotten sometimes, but I just think they’re so cute!

Do you have any exciting plans/goals for the future?

So many plans! I’m currently working on some brand new products that I’ve never made before which I hope to release at the end of the year. The wholesale side of the business is a also a big focus this year, I’d love to have Lately Studio stocked all over the world!

Who are some of your favourite small businesses?

Too many to name, ha! But a few of my all-time faves are Cai & Jo, Feu Candles, Katie Gillies Surface Design and Rat Betty.
